Minute Book 1829 -1831, page 406. Halifax County Court, July 25,1831.
On the 25th of July, 1831, personally appeared in open court, being a court
of record, John Smallman, resident of said county, aged 76, being first duly
sworn according tolaw, doth on his oath, make the following declaration, in
order to obtain the provisions made by the acts of Congress of the 18 of March,
1818 and the 1st of May, 1820; that the said John Smallman enlisted for the
term of twelve months, in the year 1776 in the state of Virginia in the Company
commanded by Capt. Edward Moody in the Regiment commanded by Col. Green, in
the State of Virginia on the Continental Establishment, that he contind. to
serve in the said corps until the time expired when he was discharged from the
said service in Fredericksbg., Virginia. And in puruance of the Act of the
1st of May 1820, I do solemnly swear that I was resident citizen of the United
States on the 18th of March, 1818 and that I have not, since that time by gift,
sale or in any manner, disposed ofmy property with intent therebvy to diminsh
it so as to bring myself within the provisions of the Act of Congress entitled.
An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of
the United States in the Revolutionary War. Nor have I any income other that
what is contained in the statement thereunto attached and by me subscribed:
6 cows, 10 head ofhogs, 4 sheep and 120 acres. I am a planter by occupation,
but am illy able to do anything and could not support myself ifit was not
for the assistance of my two sons who live with me, the youngest of which is
30 years of age; that no change of consequence has taken place in my property
since lMarch 18, 1818, only that I owe my sons, Wmn. H. and Thomas Smallman,
$350.00 and more to others amt. to $140.00. (Signed John Smallman)
Extracts from the records of the Clerks Office of the Circuit Court of
Halifax County, Virginia: In 1764 John Smallman bought 200 acres ofland on
the north fork of Difficult Creek. Deed Book 5 page 375. In 1791 John
Smallman
Sr. sold to John Smallman Jr. 120 acres, a part of the tract on which John Sr.
was living. [Witnesses: Tho. Roberts, John Roberts, Edward Eastham. D. B.
12-125] In 1795 John Smallman, Sr. and Martha his wife, sold 80 acres on
Difficult Cree, Witnesses: Thod. Roberts, Edwd. Eastham, Wm. Roberts. D. B.
