OCCUPATION: Lawyer.

Note for:   George W. Rittenhouse,   CAL 1853 - 21 Sep 1901         Index

Individual Note:
BIRTH: George's age is listed as 7 years in the 1860 Ohio Census detailed under his father's information, James Rittenhouse.

NEED TO DO: He disappeared at some point, possibly to Mexico. Note made in probation of brother Wells C. Rittenhouse's estate that he had been unheard of for ten years and had been declared legally dead. Note on family group sheet from Judith Lamb Tucker in 1960's that he was declared legally dead about 21 Sep 1901 by decree of Third District Court, Salt Lake City (he had disappeared ten years before). I don't remember if they had to declare him dead when Welles died. Attested J. U. Eldredge Jr., Clerk by W. W. Farnsworth, Deputy Clerk Indorsed #3478, District Court 3rd Judicial District State of Utah Filed May 7, 1908.

One of the Rittenhouse men in this generation or the next younger one was declared legally dead. That person left children behind who were adopted out. Need to find wife and children, etc., of George or whomever. In an e-mail 13 December 2000 from Susan L. Griffith to her sister Judith Rittenhosue, Susan writes "Welles C. Rittenhuose's brother, George, is the one who was declared dead as he had been missing for over 10 years. This George Rittenhouse SUPPOSEDLY never married or had children. Yes, he is the one that it was rumored that he was living in Mexico and possibly did have some children. I think mother said that a Rittenhouse person came through OK City and called Aunt Olive inquiring about the family. Aunt Olive believed that it was a child of her Uncle George but she didn't want anyone to know that he had children of Mexican descent, etc. She didn't acknowledge a family connection to the person who called her...I had speculated that this George Rittenhouse was a likely candidate to be the Rittenhouse who abandoned his children in OK. However, that doesn't fit because of his age. He would not have had a child close to mother's age as he was a brother to mother's grandfather, Austin James Rittenhuose..."
