LETTER FROM SUSAN GRIFFITH TO WANDA J. O'DELL on 4 Mar 1987: . . . I was thrilled that you had run across a "Nicholas O'Dell". In your letter you referred to the estate settlement of Thomas O'Dell. In your letter you referred to the estate settlement of Thomas O'Dell, deceased 1936 [sic, corrected to 1836]. . . The reason is that I have never seen the name "Nicholas" O'Dell written or printed anywhere. I was beginning to think that he never existed. To say this must sound strange but it is family "tradition" that the father of my Amanda O'Dell Dacus was a Nicholas O'Dell but I had never found a Nicholas or "Nick" in all of my O'Dell researching.
Here is what little I do know about this supposed Nicholas O'Dell. He was said to have been born in South Carolina where his daughter Amanda A. O'Dell Dacus was born but then moved to Georgia around Rome, Georgia. His children were suppose to have been William Calvin, Jackson, Harrison, Amanda A., and Eliza. I have not been able to find a Nicholas O'Dell in S.C. or Ga. I'm enclosing a pedigree chart which lists back to his daughter, Amanda A. who married Pascal L. Dacus. . .
My Amanda A. O'Dell was said to have married in Alabama to Pascal L. Dacus about 1848 but I have not been able to find a marriage record for them. Also I have not been able to find them listed in any 1850 census of Al., Ga., or Ar. In the 1850 Census of Cherokee Co., Al. the (sic) were several of the brothers and parents of my Pascal L. Dacus, but he and Amanda were not there. They are in Greene Co., Ar. by the 1860 Census, though. In the 1850 Census of Cherokee Co., Al. there was a James O'Dell family , Rignal O'Dell family and a Rignal O'Dell Jr. family which I feel must be related to my Amanda O'Dell Dacus but I haven't been able to make the connection. . .
CENSUSES:
1850 in Cherokee Co., Alabama are found James, p. 117, Rignal, p. 117, and Renal, Jr., p. 118.
