Note for:   William H. Tyner,   1790/1800 - BEF 1850         Index

Individual Note:
NOTE: This William H. Tyner could have been born to Dempsey and Obedience Tyner when they were between 35 and 45 years of age. In a conversation between Judith Lamb Rittenhouse Carpenter and her relative Connie Tyner Foster, family tradition handed down through William H. Tyner's son John Wiley Tyner to his granddaughter, Connie Tyner Foster, states that these Tyners came from Tyner, Tennessee, which was named after their family. Research by Judith shows that Tyner, Tennessee, was named after Capt. J. S. Tyner, grandson of Dempsey Tyner.

BIRTH: 1830 U.S. Census in McNairy Co., Tennessee, has William H. Tyner between 30-40 years old.

SPOUSE: Louisa Ann Barnes
SOURCE OF BIRTH: 1830 U.S. Census of McNairy Co., TN, probably male aged 5-10.

SOURCE OF DEATH: Died before 1870 Census where wife Louisa Ann Barnes Tyner is a widow in Greene Co., AR.
(2). Ann Tyner
BIRTH:          ABT 1825          PLACE:
SPOUSE: Dennis Barnes, Jr.
SOURCE: Dennis Barnes, Jr., had a wife in the 1840 Census listed as being born between 1820-1825. She would then fit into the age category for the 1830 Census as being one of the daughters born between 1825-1830 to William H. Tyner, Sr.
Here I must point out that if the Ann Tiner who married Dennis Barnes was born in 1825 then she would have only been about 13 years old in 1838 when she married Dennis Barnes. That does seem a little bit young for a marriage; however, keep in mind that girls did marry at younger ages in the 1830-40 time frame. Also her father William H. Tyner, Sr., died between 1830 and 1840, leaving her an orphan. In the 1840 census, Dennis Barnes, Jr., did have a young wife listed as between 15 and 20 years of age...Information from Susan Lamb Griffith, Addendum Section, Tyner Tymes, 1993.

BIRTH:                              PLACE:
SOURCE OF BIRTH: Information from Tyner Family Bible of his son James McDonald Tyner. Note that Benton Co., Tennessee, was not formed until 1835 from Henry, Humphrey and Stewart Counties. Probably born in McNairy Co., Tenn. because parents there in 1830 census.
SOURCE OF MARRIAGE: Microfilm Atlbe 446 Marriage Records, Benton Co., TN, Vol. 2, for J. W. Tyner and Lucinaa Barnes.
SOURCES: 1850, 1860, and 1870 US censuses have family in Benton Co., TN.

5. NAME: Sarajane Tyner

MAR: 21 Feb 1861          PLACE: ,Benton, Tennessee
DEATH:                              PLACE:
BURIAL:                    PLACE:
SPOUSE: James W. Camp
SOURCE OF BIRTH: 1850 US Census in Benton Co., TN, lists Jane as 29 and born in Tenn. She was enumerated in the household of Dennis Barnes, Sr., and his wife Amy. She would have been born about 1821 and thus 9 years old in the 1830 census. Although some people believe Sarajane Tyner was a child of Dempsey, born 1755, she more likely a child of William H. Tyner, born 1790-1800. She lived in Benton Co., TN, along with John W. Tyner, Thomas Tyner, and William H. Tyner (Jr.), probably her brothers.

QUESTIONS ??? Where was she in the 1840 census when she would have been about 19-20 years old? Where was she in 1860 when she would have been about 39-40. Could this Jane Tyner listed as 29 in the 1850 Census actually have been 19 with an error in her age by the census taker? Could she be the same person as Sara Jane Tyner age 30 in 1960 census who would have also been about 31 when she married W. Camp in 1861 in Benton Co., TN? Jane and Sarajane could be the same person and thus a 2nd daughter of Wm. H. Tyner, Sr., with Ann Tiner being the first daughter? Comments by Susan Lamb Griffith in Tyner Tymes Addendum, 1993.       Hi Judith, I replied with my answer to your request sometime back in October/November as I visited the church one nice warm Sunday afternoon. You must have not gotten it some how even though I sent it to both of your Email addresses and posted it to the Tyner list site and replied to your Ancestry My Family message too.
I went down each row hoping to find a Tyner Stone. I'm sorry to say I found no Tyner tombstones in the cemetery, nor anyone so far that has a cemetery listing. The cemetery is very old and has many areas that stones are unreadable or crumbled. I am still trying to locate someone knowledgeable, but not able to reach listed ones as Email addresses are invalid. I do know the preacher listed but couldn't locate him either and he probably couldn't help either, but may know someone to contact. He must have changed denominations as he used to be the pastor of my wife's Baptist Church, but had retired. My wife is from Camden as I told you I was familiar with area and went directly to church. I never heard of the Rockport name before you mentioned, so I'll search for info on that as maybe another cemetery?
A coincidence with this church is my great grandfather Rev. Amos Hays probably preached there and may have know our Tyners as he was the Benton County Circuit Riding pastor in that county 865-1880. He too changed denominations at a late age. He also was a Baptist that had changed to the Methodist during the Civil war as he was opposed to slavery and it is believed my .great grandmother was killed during war (1864 in Shelbyville, TN) for their stance, so he left that area and came to Benton Co in West Tennessee. He took on the ministry later for the Tennessee Methodist conference and organized the CME (Colored Methodist Episcopal as they were known then) Churches in West Tennessee, thus was not popular with people of that era according to the Methodist Archives. They praised his ministry in their obituary published in their conference magazine for his devotion to bring God's ministry to the freed blacks of that area.
Excuse me for getting long winded, but I thought the coincidence of both my family sides may have met each other and some history of my great grandfather might be inter resting to others.

Hi James,
Would it be too much to ask you to write down any Tyners in Shiloh Cemetery--or to also search for his father William H. Tyner, Sr. He was born about 1790/1800 and was in McNairy Co., Tenn., in the 1830 census and in Tishomingo Co., Miss., in the 1840 census. He was in several Miss. State censuses in Tishomingo Co. during the 1840's. I haven't been able to find him after 1847. I don't know what his wife's name was or what happened to her after the 1840 census. It would be wonderful to have them all buried together. Judith
P.S. I am so excited that you will try to find Jr. at least in the Shiloh Cemetery.
On Google looking for Shiloh Cem in Benton CO., Tenn., I found the following: Shiloh Cemetery 355735N 0880638W Rockport and also a reference to Shiloh Baptist Church. Also 3380 Shiloh Church Rd, Camden 38320-7123 Established 1867 Cemetery established 1954.

I don't know now what other information I intended to send you since I've waited so long. Hope this still finds you. Judith
