Text:   Extracted by Elizabeth Rittenhouse Lamb: On 3 June 1882 on the "DECLARATION FOR WIDOW'S ARMY PENSION" LAURA JANE HOCKING stated that she married Wm. H. Hocking in Edws. Co., Ill in 23 Aug. 1859 and that her name before said marriage was Laura Jane Stennett. She stated the date and place of death of her husband, Wm. H. Hocking and said she has remained his widow ever since. She further swears that she has the (above name) following children of her deceased husband and herself. She further states that said husband has left no minor child, by a former marriage, 'his only child by a former marriage being Frederick M. Hocking, who was born on 8th day of Dec. A.D., 1885.' Child #1 marriage on p. 117 'Early Marriages of Richland County Illinois' by Lois Taylor. Child #5 marriage on p. 211 same book.

Text:    Mrs. Madsen had given me the names of William's wives and the information as follows:
Wife #1 Rhoda Grounds - died in childbirth
" #2 Laura J. Stennett - William married her, divorced her
and later remarried her [No dates were given]
        " #3 Laura Stewart - married ____Aug 1859
With this information, when I was in Albion in 1968, I found the Marriage Record of William H. Hocking to Laura Stewart, 23 August 1859. Then I found the Marriage Record of William H. Hocking to Laura J. Stennett, 14 Mar 1870. But I could not find an earlier record of their marriage.
I then drew the following conclusion - WHICH THE WIDOW'S PENSION PAPERS HAS NOW CORRECTED, THAT ALL THE CHILDREN, EXCEPT FRED WERE BY LAURA J. STENNETT HOCKING. My FALSE conclusions were that the first two children, Martha and Nellie, were William's by the 3rd Wife Laura Stewart - Martha b. 1861 and Nellie M. b. 1865. Then I decided that Wm. H. Hocking b. 1871 and Mary Iva b. 1879 were by Wife #2 Laura J. Stennett after she remarried William in 1870. I had found the names of the children from the Guardian's Report by James Scott Stone which were on file in the Edwards Co. Court House.
NOW, BECAUSE OF THE PENSION PAPERS we know that Laura J Stennett Hocking was THE MOTHER OF ALL THE CHILDREN EXCEPT FRED. Among those papers was the Certified Copy of Iva's Birth Certificate [I sent you a Xerox copy] 24 June 1879. Her mother's maiden name Michels. Mother's age 36.
In the 1860 U.S. Census Micro-Film for Edwards Co. Ill. which I read is as follows: Page 908, P.O. Albion 1 Aug 1860
Dwell #/ Fam #
768 766 William Hocking 24 M Farmer Born Illinois. Marr. within the yr.
        Laura " 17 F Keeping House Born Illinois " " "
NOTE: This Laura was born ca. 1843
        Laura J. Hocking - on Iva's Birth Cert. - age 36 - born ca. 1843
Laura J. Hocking - on her own death Cert. - age 41 - born ca. 1843
In the 1850 U.S. Census Micro-Film for Edwards Co. Ill., which I read, Page 524, Dwell. # 168/ Fam. # 169, the last person listed living with James Hocking and his wife Lucinda [Michels] was Laura Stennett , 7, F, born Ill. This Laura Stennett is the only Laura Stennett of any age listed in the entire 1850 Census and there is no Laura Stewart of any age.
Since Laura J. Hocking gave her Maiden Name on her dau's Birth Cert. as MICHELS there must be some relationship between her and Lucinda Michels, wife of James Hocking. Also in the 1850 Census there was no Laura Michels of any age.
MY CONCLUSIONS NOW ARE THAT WILLIAM H. HOCKING HAD ONLY 2 WIVES AND NOT 3. THERE MUST HAVE BEEN A DIVORCE BETWEEN THE BIRTH OF NELLIE b. 1865 AND THE BIRTH OF WILLIAM H. b. 27 Oct., 1871, since there is a marriage record 14 Mar 1870.
Why Laura gave her name on the Marr. Cert. 23 Aug. 1859 as LAURA STEWART and LAURA STENNETT on Marr. Cert. 14 Mar 1870 and her MAIDEN NAME AS MICHELS on her daughter Iva's birth cert. is a mystery to me. THE WIDOWS ARMY PENSION PAPERS prove that LAURA in ALL 3 CASES is ONE and the SAME PERSON.
Since the 1860 Census shows Laura's age as 17 and "married within the year" that fits with her marriage age as 16 in Aug 1859. Her Death Cert. gave her age as 41 years, 3 months and the death date as 25 May 1884. That would make her birth date 25 Feb. 1843. Perhaps she did not want to give her real name on her first Marr. Cert. since she was only 16. Perhaps a Stewart family had her living with them & she used their name. She must have been an orphan or something
I believe I have answered all your questions. As soon as I find out about the marriage cert. in Richland Co. for Martha O. Hocking and Charles Crane or Crome, I'll let you know.
Hope you and Brita have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Fondly,
Elizabeth
