General Source: S5General Source: S586Text: Hi Susan, David and April, (1) While going to David's great grandfather George Rittenhouse to post the WWI Registration cards and 1910 census information, I noticed I had documented him in the 1920 census: 1920 Federal Census, State of Oklahoma, County of Oklahoma, Vol. 49, E.D. 154, Sheet 5, Line 28: George B. Rittenhouse as a lodger of an unnamed hotel at 200 Broadway. George is white, 40 years old, born Nebraska. Immediately below on line 29 is listed Mignon A. Rittenhouse, white, 35 years of age, born in Iowa. Both sets of their parents are listed born in Ohio. George is listed as a lawyer in general practice and Mignon has no occupation. (2) While going through Mother's folder B137, I reread a tribute to Ann Rittenhouse who I think was Mignon. So I'm wondering if the A. in Mignon A. is for Ann. Do you know David? Love, Judith/Mom
Hi Judith, Susan, and April, Mignon went by Ann. "Ann" and "Anne" Rittenhouse in our family records from this period refer to Mrs. Geo. B. (Mignon ASHTON) Rittenhouse. I think the "A" stands for her maiden name, Ashton, though it is possible she was actually named Mignon Ann Ashton. I am not sure about this middle name. I don't think I've ever seen it printed. Margaret May and Margaret May's contemporaries called her "Chief." If one considers that the meaning of Mignon is "little," someone of Mignon's character probably would have wanted to be called something else. After all, this is the generation that considered Albert Paul's and Alvah's claims to royal lineage the truth...David
