Text: "William Carroll and Mary Ann (Smothers) Barnes were highly respected citizens. He was a progressive farmer who owned his house and farm. On our way to or from my grandparents we occasionally stopped for a short visit with Uncle Carroll and Aunt Polly Ann. She was referred to as Polly Ann rather than Mary Ann. Once after a visit there I recall my mother saying, 'Aunt Polly Ann always keeps her house as clean as a pin.' I was intrigued with their well. The bucket hung by rope tied to the end of a pole centered over the well. To draw water you pulled the pole down with the rope and held it until the bucket filled. Then the weight of the pole on the other end of the fulcrum lifted the bucket of water to the top. To me that was a real invention."

Note: The only Hallmarks in Tishomingo Co., MS, in 1860 are in household 2201/2201 Jesse Hallmark, age 67, Farmer, 650/4000, born Tenn. with Louisa J. Hallmark, 31, born Ala. A lot of Halmarks (sic) in Itawamba, Mississippi. There is an Elizabeth Hallmark of the correct age, 29 years, in Carroll Co., Tennessee with husband John Hallmark (not Bill or William). He is age 32. I notice I also have a note that her father Henry Barnes married Susan Wyatt in Carroll Co., Tennessee. So they had been
Text: NEED TO DO: Susan Lamb Griffith calculated Margaret's birth from the 1850 census. Henry and Susan both died of Typhoid Fever. The 1860 Census of Benton Co., Tennessee, lists Margarete Barnes, age 17 & John Barnes, age 11 were living with their married sister, Nancy Barnes and her husband, W. J. Sanders. Margaret Barnes was said to have married John Hallmark; however, Susan found no marriage record to confirm that. Instead, Susan did find a marriage record where John Hallmark married a Sara Ann Barnes on 24 Sep 1865. Then in the 1870 Census of Benton Co., Tennessee, Susan found a John Hallmark age 23 and wife Sarah age 27 with 2 ch: Green Hallmark age 4 and Robert Hallmark age 2. Margaret Barnes may have married someone else instead of John Hallmark?? Or was she called Sarah Ann for some reason?
