Text:   James Michels, son of George and Susanna Michels, was born 11 April 1786 in Bangor, Maine. He was married 8 May 1806 (certificate issued) in Clinton, Maine, to Sarah "Sally" Getchell. Sarah was a sister of Mary Getchell who married George Michels, a brother of James Michels. James and Sarah had five children: Sarah, Sumner, Lucinda, Randel and Randel (sic). The first son named Randel died in infancy and a later son was named Randel also. James died 8 November 1817 in Clinton, Maine. His widow, Sarah came to Illinois with the Michels family in 1817-1818. See James J. Michel's history for details of their migration from Maine to Illinois. Sarah married John N. Michels, a younger brother of her first husband.

Text:   ... James S. Michels, son of John and Sarah (Getchell) Michels, was born at Curtsville, Edwards County, on 31 July 1820. He married Elizabeth Spencer. She was born in 1818 in Lincolnshire, England, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Kershaw) Spencer. The children of James and Elizabeth Michels were: Elizabeth, born 1841, married Levinus Harris; John, born 1847, married Mary Ellen Rude; James Jr., born 1849; Eliza, born 1852, married Jesse Bunting; and Minnie, born 1856, no issue. James S.Michels was active in the Methodist Church. He was also a large farmer, later a livestock dealer and an active abolitionist. He died 11 February 1910 in Albion.
