Subject: William Tyners
Hi Tammy, Thanks so much for sharing your information with me.
Back in the 1970's I compiled a chart of all the Tyners I could locate in Tennessee. I don't know if you or anyone else would like a copy of that or not. Let me know and maybe someone can scan it for the group. If just a few want it, I'll mail it out hard copy. But I'll mention all of the Williams below.
1840 Census, Hamilton Co., TN: William Tyner, age 50-60 years.
1850 Census, Hardin Co., TN: William Tyner, born in North Carolina and age 51. The William H. Tyners in Tishomingo Co., MS, are mine.
1830 Census, McNairy Co., TN & 1840 Census, Tishomingo Co., MS: (1) My William H. Tyner, Sr., was 30-40 years old in the Purdy, McNairy Co., TN, census of 1830. Most of Tennessee's 1810 and 1820 censuses were destroyed and I cannot find him at that time. I haven't been able to find him after about 1847. I found him on two tax lists in the 1840's this past year; I haven't unpacked five boxes of last year's research yet so I don't remember which of the two counties or exactly what two dates.
William H. Tyner, Jr. 1840 census, Page 23, line 23, as read by my mother in 1976: William H. is "junior" and 20-30 years old and his wife Louisa is 15-20 years old. I found him on two tax lists in the 1840's this past year; I haven't unpacked five boxes of last year's research yet so I don't remember which of the two counties or exactly what two dates.
William H. (Jr.) is the brother of my John Wiley Tyner and his wife is the sister of my Lucinda Barnes. John Wiley Tyner and Lucinda Barnes also married later. William H. Tyner and Louisa Barnes were marred on Sept. 11, 1838.
1850 Census, Benton Co., TN.: William H. Tyner, 31, Louisa 28, James 10, Sarah 8, Davis 3, both parents born in Tennessee, This is son of William H. Tyner, Sr. of Tishomingo Co., MS, and McNairy Co., TN.
1860 Census, Benton Co., TN: William H. Tyner (Jr) age 42, born in Tenn.
He died before 1870. Louisa and his children are found in the 1870 Census of Greene Co., Arkansas.
1850 Census: William W. Tyner GA Walker W. Chickamauga. He was age 32 which makes him born in 1818. Although Zella Armstrong lists him as a son of Dempsey Tyner, I believe Obedience was not bearing children by then and that the correct William is my William H. Tyner. Haven't been able to prove that yet. NOTE: I'm looking in my Tyner Tymes for all of this information on Williams and I'm confused right here. I listed him like you have him. Then I list the household of his "widow". That's what confuses me. How did he get indexed if he was dead? Why did Leoma Newland list her as his widow? Maybe this William W. was a junior and son of Catherine and William W. Tyner. If this is junior, why didn't Leoma list his household?
Catherine's oldest child at home was 23 so this certainly could have been her son.
1900 Census, Benton Co., TN: Benton William F. Tyner: Born in Tenn., age 49.
William Tyner (son of Thomas Tyner, grandson of William H. Tyner, Sr.) 1860 Census, Benton Co., TN: age 6, born in Tenn. 1870 Census, Benton Co., TN: age 16, born in Tenn. 1880 Census, Benton Co., TN: age 26, born in Tenn.

Note: This William Tyner was William W. Tyner when I got the papers from National Archives.

Note: This is probably William H. Tyner, Jr.
Judith Rittenhouse hand copied this in 1995 from Ronald Tyner's notes at his home. In a conversation that spring 1995 with Ronald, he said that William Tyner was an old guy in the Tishomingo Co., born 1789, Chowan Co., NC. Wm. Henry Tyner of Tishomingo Co. was in the 1842 Tax Record for Tishomingo.

Text: Hi Barbara,
That’s a beautiful land record. I only have four Jesses in my data bank although someone has dozens—was that you? I don’t know where he would fit, but there were a bunch of Tyners in Miss. Right now I don’t remember where the Arch Tyners lived in Mississippi because I don’t have them in my data base. The Choctaw Nation was south of Tupelo and the Chickasaw Nation was north of Tupelo, Mississippi. Seems like every child, grandchild, on down, had a Reuben, William, John, maybe James, Jackson, Jessee, etc. Makes it harder for us today, doesn’t it?
According to my research, my William H. Tyner was there in the 1840 Census for Tishomingo Co., Mississippi, and listed on the Poll Tax Lists for Tishomingo Co., MS, as W. H. Tyner for 1840, 1841, and 1845. Ronald says in a phone call in spring 1995 that William Tyner, the old guy in Tishomingo Co., was born 1789 in Chowan Co., N.C. He further states that William Henry Tyner of Tishomingo Co., MS, was on the 1842 Tax Records for the county.
There was a Ronald Tyner living in Olive Branch, Mississippi, that my sister and I visited with in 1995. He was ¼ Cherokee from one of his grandmothers. He descended from Reuben Clarence Tyner, born 1912 in Arkansas, first child of Francis Smith Tyner, born 1871 in Mississippi and Lillia Isabelle Bishop. Francis was born to Nancy Smith and William Henry Tyner, born in Lafayette Co., MS, in 1844, son of John F. Tyner and Mary A.
In his notes, Ronald had John, Jesse, and Elias Tyners in LaFayette Co., MS in 1840. He had an 1850 Census for Lafayette Co., MS, household 1282 for E. Tyner (Elizabeth, wife of Jesse Tyner) with children Wiley or Riley, age 20, Thomas Tyner, age 22, Sarah, age 18, Nancy, age 14, and Mary, age 16. He also had a Lafayette Probate Record for a Jesse in 1849, Old DeSoto Co. Land Claim in 1847 (for Jesse?). He believed she was the Chickasaw woman. Have a printed p. 48, from what book I don’t know, which states “Box 376-439: 397, Jesse Tiner, dec’d 1849 (59 pieces) C. M. Phipps, Adm. Mrs. E. Tiner (Elizabeth from Ronald), widow and children mentioned. No list of heirs but persons mentioned are: Thomas Tiner, Lewis (or Levi) Tiner and J. M. Tiner.
Now I have another page copied of his notes for a John F. Tyner who came to Lafayette Co., MS, in 1850 with Jesse and Elias. In 1860 he was in Guadelupe Co., Texas, p. 53 (of the census ?). A printed page from the (History of) Tate Co. Heritage, p. 171, “A few of the early settlers before 1840 of this community are . . . John F. Tyner, Jesse Tyner. Then between 1840 and 1850 came people . . . Tiner is listed.
Let us know if any of you Tyners benefit from any of the information above and if you have any more to add. Judith Rittenhouse Carpenter

I found the attached Mississippi Land Record for Jesse E. Tiner, issued 02 April 1860. Who is this Jesse, if Dempsey's Jesse died in 1849? Regards, Barbara Tiner Moshier

Leavell has on the web. She did a ton of typing to get all of that on. I'm grateful so I don't have to type it all. If you go to the web site below in one of our e-mails received yesterday or today, Dempsey is person number 47, more than halfway through the descendants of Nicholas Tyner. It's in bold type so you can perhaps find it easier. Some of the references are credited to me-Judith Rittenhouse. Those of Frances Yager/John Strange came from their correspondence with me; also Ruby Cranor. I was given the Bible record of Jackson Tyner that was included. Look under "1790-1800 A William Tyner is born according to Censuses of 1840 Tishomingo Co., MS, and 1830 McNairy Co., TN. He would have been born to Dempsey and Obedience when they were between 35-45 years of age. Our family tradition states that our Tyners came from Tyner, Tennessee, which was named after their ancestors. Judith Rittenhouse's line.***"" This is William H. Tyner, Sr., and he's mine. He's born when Dempsey and Obedience would have been between 35-45. Further down under "1818 A William Tyner is born when Demsey and Obedience would both be about 62 years of age. He died 5 May 1861 near Rock Spring, GA. Probably a grandson." Lots of times people will put this last William in as their child, but Obedience could not have had a child at the age of 62. Now look towards the end of this information on Dempsey. There is a list of "Children of Dempsey Tyner and Obedience Sevier: iii...WILLIAM TYNER, b. abt. 1783, North Carolina; d. May 05, 1861,Rock Spring, Walker County, Georgia. Jane A. Leavell has combined the two Williams right here. She has the birth date of our William H. born between 1790-1800 and the death date and place of the William Tyner born in 1818. I just want you to be straight about this and avoid confusion. It's been around for years and you will see it more than I care to mention. Seems like once something gets circulated, you can hardly get it removed because you don't even know who all has picked it up. Hope this helps you some or a lot. Ask me any questions you'd like to. It's a great place to get tons of information. Text: This book is by Gen. Marcus J. Wright. Nothing really in this book really except to straighten out why farmers in Tishomingo Co., MS, went to McNairy Co., TN
Remember that the 1830 US Census in McNairy Co., Tennessee, has William H. Tyner between 30-40 years of age.
Chapter III, p. 11: The lands now embraced in McNairy county, prior to the year 1819, were occupied by the Chickasaw Indians, it being a part of the territory then known as the Western District. . . the first year that the settlers, few in number and far apart, were compelled to cross the river and go into Middle Tennessee for corn to make the bread. There were but few cattle and hogs, not enough for meat; but the supply was not scant, as game was in abundance, consisting of bear, deer, turkey and small game. The names of the first settlers are unknown.
p. 12-13: The county now began to receive quite a number of immigrants, a large majority of whom were originally from North Carolina. (The first white man was born in the county in December 1821. Prominent citizens in the various parts of the county are listed by surname only. Central or about Purdy included Barnes. No Tyners are mentioned.)
p. 32: (Lists Company A's officers for the civil war for the Confederacy which includes John W. Youngblood.)
General Source: S1374
Note: There was a Tanner, etc.
Comment by Judith Rittenhouse: Unless the census takers didn’t spell Tyner correctly, then the Tyners were gone? William H. Tyner is listed, however, in the 1845 poll tax for Tishomingo Co., MS.
