Text:    It is with sorrow that we chronicle the sad death of our friend and neighber(sic), Isaac Blackford, who commited suicide last Sunday morning at his home east of this place. We are not fully acquainted with the circumstances that prompted Mr. Blackford to commit the horrible act, so (sic) will merely give an account of the tragedy as it comes to us: It seems that Mr. Blackford and one of his little boys were at home alone Saturday night and on Sunday morning he sent the little boy with a note to Mr. Albert Farmer's, a near neighbor and at whose place Mr. B.'s wife was staying, telling them that he was going to kill himself. Shortly after the little fellow had started with the note he heard the report of a gun, but thinking nothing of it continued on his way. Upon receiving the note Mr. Farmer accompanied by Nels Dixon immediately started for Mr. Blackford's, but arrived there only to find him lying on the floor dead, in a pool of his own life's blood. The weapon used was a shotgun, which he discharged in his mouth, completely blowing his head into (sic) atom, only a portion of the chin remaining attached to the trunk. It was indeed a sad spectacle. The coroner;s inquest was held Sunday afternoon, and the remains were interred in the Blackford cemetery on Monday afternoon. Mr. Blackford was an old resident of this county, one of our foremost farmers, and left his business in excellent shape. Financially he was in a very comfortable condition. The neighbors all speak well of him, and say he was a good citizen and an accommodating neighbor. He leaves a sorrow stricken family to mourn his death.

Text:    MRS. ANNA BLACKFORD
Mrs. Anna D. Blackford was born near Canton, Illinois, December 16, 1846, and departed this life December 20, 1929, aged 83 years, 4 days.
Practically all her life was spent on the Old Homestead, near Almena, Kansas. Her mother died when she was two years of age and she was cared for by an aunt. She was married in 1866 to Isaac Blackford. They resided near Manhattan, Kansas, for a short time, then moved to the west as one of the pioneer settlers. It took such as she, with her pluck and courage to endure the hardships of a pioneer life.
Five children were born to this union, Ed Blackford, who preceded her in death, Mrs. Sarah E. Miller, Almena, Kansas; Mrs. Effie Duling, Rockford, Washington; Thad Blackford, Englewood, California; and Ray Blackford, Tampa, Florida.
Mrs. Blackford was not affiliated with any church. Her belief was "Right Living," tho' sometimes in judgement she was found wanting. But seldom erred in good intentions. Nevertheless she was a good mother and a sacrificing mother, and her good and charitable deeds in sickness were not only confined near her home but miles around her helping hand was felt. The past ten years of her life wasn't pleasant as she suffered a stroke of paralysis that left her greatly afflicted.
The funeral was held at the home of her grandson, Merle Burnett, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, where many of her former, old time friends gathered to pay their last respects to one who had lived so long in their midst. The services were in charge of Rev. R. C. Smith of Almena and burial in the cemetery near her former home.
        CARD OF THANKS
We wish to express our sincere thanks for all those who so kindly assisted our dear Mother, during the years of her afflictions and also for the floral offerings at her funeral.
Mr. and Mrs. John S. Miller
        Mr. and Mrs. Charles Duling
        Mr. and Mrs. Thad Blackford
        Mr. and Mrs. Ray Blackford
