General Source: S151Text: ...I agree with you that Gerhard's marriage seems to be a hopeless case. This letter was interrupted while I searched my files of correcpondence, extending over 35 years, with our distant kinsman and my oldest friend in the Washington area, Col. Calvin Kephart, who died last August. He is descended from Grehard through your New Jersey branch...He was convined that Gerhard married a girl whose father's first name was Peter, in view of the fact that his younger son (my ancestor) was named Peter Rittenhouse. Toward the end of his life he expressed the opinion that Gerhard's wife was Anna Margaretha, daughter of Peter Umstatt (Umstead), but he had no proof...In the case of Anna Margaretha Umstatt, no husband seems to have been found for her. It's an interesting and plausible theory...and I would like either to prove or disprove it. Since starting this page, I've just taken a look at my copy of William I. Hull's "WIlliam Penn and the Dutch Quaker Migration to Pennsylvania" (1935). Umstatt (or Umstat) is mentioned on several pages, but on page 406 the immigrant's family is given; it may be charted as follows:
Hans Peter Umstat
m. Barbara
Anna Margaretha Eva; m. Johannes;
(no husband assigned) Hendrick removed to Bebber's
Pannebecker (ancestors of the Township, 1702
Pennypacker family)
I have underscored the names of Peter and Barbara; you will recall that my ancestor, Peter Rittenhouse, had a daughter Barbara, who married Charles WIlliam Rubincam. Also, Peter Rittenhouse had another daughter Margaret, who could have been named for her presumed grandmother, Anna Margaretha Umstat (Umstatt, Umstead). The Umstats came to Pennsylvania in October 1685, apparently from Krefeld on the Rhine (Hull, p. 397)...It's an attractive theory, BUT we can not accept it as fact without confirmatory evidence.
