Obituary
Daniel Hocking was born in the vicinity of Bone Gap, Illinois at the farm home of his parents, John and Susanna Hocking, on May 11, 1848.
At that early day the community was sparsely settled and the boyhood of Mr. Hocking was filled with trying, yet interesting, experiences of pioneer life. He drove oxen and broke virgin prairie sod; he herded livestock on the range; he travelled forest trails; he marked the coming of the little public school house; he witnessed the approach and progress of civilization over a period of nearly 90 years, to be exact, 89 years, 7 months and 28 days.
'Uncle Dan' he has come to be known by most in Bone Gap today. He was never a seeker after notoriety; not given to effusive speech. He lived his simple life every day; a quiet, dependable, respected citizen.
In 1871 he was united in marriage to Harriet Gould. Ten children blessed this union, three of whom departed this life in infancy. The good wife and mother in 1897; a married daughter, Mrs. Nettie Baldwin, also preceded him in death. Three sons, Edson, Dennis and Ralph, who live in or near Bone Gap; two daughters, Mrs. Chloe Mercer of Idaho and Mrs. Bernice Martin of Washington, and a son Clarence of Montana, survive their father.
On March 2, 1901, he was again married, to Mrs. Ella Lee. Later he moved from the farm to town, where he engaged in the mercantile business for twelve years. He has been retired from active business for about fifteen years.
When he was a youth, sixteen years of age, he was converted, under the ministry of Rev. Greene, and united with the Methodist church of Bone Gap, where he was a faithful attendant at Sunday School and preaching services, through the years, as long as health permitted. Of late years, when he was denied the privilege of going to church, he enjoyed listening to sermons and religious services broadcast over the air.
Besides the living children previously mentioned, he leaves the faithful wife, who had ministered to him with such tender care in the years of his falling strength; a step-son, Thos. R. Lee, to whom Mr. Hocking was a true father; twenty grandchildren and five great grandchildren to sorrow because of his passing.
