HISTORY: From this time on (1635) Richard is spelling his surname as FOSTER. He is considered the Father of most Foster's in the Southern United States today (2001). Other Foster's also came to East Coast and started their lineage in America. Some Foster's went to the northern Colonies and for the most part their descendents stayed north. Richard came to Virginia and his descendents are the beginning of the Southern States Foster's through his son Robert.

However, all Foster's relate back to Richard of Flanders in 1066 AD who came from Flanders (northern France) to England. 

Richard came to America at the age of 16. His rank in his father's family in England must not have been as the first or second son or he would have remained in England to inherit his father's estate. He was probably a 2nd child and saw adventure in sailing to America and getting a fresh start. Available records do not indicate that he came as an indentured servant to anyone. We do believe his passage was provided by a Bartholomew Hoskins.

His father (Robert) in England was living the life of a Knight in the good section of society as had all his progenitors since the Battle of Hastings in the year 1066 when William the Conqueror took over England. The brother-in-law of William was named Richard of Flanders. Richard was the son of Baldwin V. Soon after the battle he became known as Richard De Foriester. One of Richard Foriester's sons was Sir Hugo Foirester. He fought with King Henry I, as General of the English Army. Sir Hugo was Governor of Etherstone by right of inheritance. After successfully defeating the Norwegian King Magnus in 1101 AD Sir Hugo Forrester was appointed Chief Lord of the Royal Forest. Sir Hugo was a person of  great eminence during the reign of King Stephen.

In the Battle of Hastings Richard of Flanders was only age 16 but was knighted for his valliant services to William the Conqueror and received large land holdings in northern England and Scotland (Northumberland County, Bamborough (Bambough, Bamburgh) in Northumberland; land also known as Adderston (Henderston). The Forster's lived here for 12 generations in a position of honor as many were Knights to the Kings of England. Our Richard Forster (Foster) was a descendant of King Henry I of  England.

The descendants of Forster, Forrester or Foster had privileges, education and opportunities.  And thus the Forster lineage lived for the next 500 years.

HISTORY: James Richard Forster/ Foster (b. 1619) came to America on 10 August 1635 from England on the ship "HMS Safety". Recent research has caused most descendants to now believe though most records call him Richard Foster some records refer to him as James Foster. Se we now call him James Richard Foster.

Richard Foster settled in Elizabeth Cittie County, Virginia and married there and was granted 250 acres of land in Lynhaven Parish in Lower Norfolk Co., Va. on 26 Nov 1653 beginning at the neck of the broad Creek running South, South West near a swamp, thense West etc., for transport of Dorcas Foster Senior, and Dorcas Foster Junior, Richard Foster, Richard Street, and Henry Williams. Later In 1655 the family removed to Gloucester County, Virginia where Richard Foster received 200 more acres for transport of four more persons: Ellen Foster, Mary Foster, Sarah Davis, Robert Bynum, Fra. Bignall. This land was at the head of Southard Creek on the Severne, in Mackajack Bay, in Gloucester Co., Va. Robert Coleman was granted land that adjoined Richard Fosters land on 18 March, 1662. As the nation grew, the Foster descendants migrated south into the Carolinas, Alabama, Georgia, and finally Texas; as well as East into Tennessee, and from there, launching themselves to the wind.

This may be the "missing link" ancestor to tie our Foster family into the royal lineage of Richard Foster / Forster (born 1619 in England). My questions remain as to the "proof" that this Richard Foster is really connected to the immigrant Richard Foster / Forster.

MISC_NOTES: This Richard may have married a Miss Ransome and has a son named Richard born in

1723 in Gloucester, Virginia and in some records Whit Church, Hampshire, England. That son names

his first son Beverly Ransome Foster born in 1748 in the Isle of Wight County of Virginia. After the

maiden names of both grandmothers. The Ransome/Ransom/Ranson family were some of the very first

to settle in Elizabeth City, Virginia as Miss Ransome's father Peter was born there in 1620. The City got it's start in 1607. glf

CHRISTENING: This is the village and church where James Richard Foster was christened under the name of Richard. His father was listed as Robert Foster.

Alverstoke, a village, a parish, and a liberty in Hants. The village stands adjacent to Stoke Bay station on the L. & S.W.R., opposite Spithead, 1 3/4 mile SSW of Gosport. It is a pleasant place, with charming environs. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office. The manor was given by the noble Saxon lady Alwara to the church of Winchester, and it still belongs to the Bishop of Winchester as superior.

Many excellent mansions, villas, and other residences, with gardens and terraces, adorn the surface and the shores, and a rich extensive prospect is enjoyed of the Solent and the Isle of Wight Stoke Bay is now a noted roadstead, where all the steam war-ships when newly fitted with their engines test their speed at the measured mile. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester, and includes the curacy of Anglesey; value, £1050. Patron, the Bishop of Winchester. The vicarages of Trinity-Gosport, St Matthew-Gosport, St John-Forton, and St Thomas-Elson are separate benefices. The parochial church is Saxon, built in 1130, repeatedly restored, and now chiefly modern. Christ Church, in the Decorated English style, was opened in 1865. Dr. Wilber-force, afterwards Bishop of Oxford, was once rector here, and Dr. Trench, afterwards Archbishop of Dublin, was his curate.

In searching the IGI records for christenings (births) in Hampshire, England around 1700 I find several

Sarah Biggs. In fact for the 100 years prior to Sarah's birth I find the county is full of Sarah Biggs entries. glf

If John Foster is the father of Richard then it is possible for John to be in England in 1723 where his son

is born. It is also possible that his wife is from there and gives birth there. Can't find a John Foster

marriage. glf

it is possible for John to be in England in 1723 where his son (my Richard) is born. Maybe it is also

possible that his wife is from there and gives birth there.

MISC_NOTES: I am currently (15 July 2005) going on the assumption that Richard Foster (born 1723)

had a father named Richard (born 1695) who left Virginia about the age of 20 as a single man or took

with him a Miss. Ransome to the families homeland of Whitchurch, Hampshire, England in about 1715. I

assume he lived in England with his wife and eventually his son Richard (born in 1723). I believe his

wife died in England or perhaps back in Virginia.

MISC_NOTES: (30 Jul 2005) I have now researched the microfilms (covering birth, marriage, death,

moving into or out of the parish, poor persons, tax lists on manor houses for Whithurch, Hampshire,

England and can not find any evidence that a Richard born in 1693 in Virginia every lived or married or

had a son named Richard born in 1723 in this parish.

MISC_NOTES: (3 Aug 2005) I believed Richard (1695) had returned to Virginia with his son Richard

(1723) prior to Richard (1695) re-marrying to a Sarah Fox in about 1733. In approximately 1746 Richard

(1723) marries Susannah Rand in the Isle of Wight. Soon both Richards join the other Foster family

members in Matthews County and live and work and die amongst them. glf

Richard Foster (born about 1695) in Virginia marries an Elizabeth Ransome from Virginia

and leave for England. There they have a son named Richard (born in 1723_ in Whitchurch, Hampshire,

England. Then they move back to Virginia and live first in the Isle of Wight County of Virginia. I believe

time will prove out that they lived on land owned by the Ransome family. Their first son was born and

named Beverly Ransome Foster. After the maiden names of both grandmothers.

The next 4 children were born in Ware Parrish, Gloucester, Virginia on land given them by the Ransome

Family. This is the reason I am guessing at as too why Susannah Rand and Richard Foster used the

Ransome name so frequently in the nameing of their children and grandchildren.

The Ransome family were some of the very first to settle in Elizabeth City, Virginia as Elizabeth

Ransome's grandfather Captain Peter Ransome was born in Mobjack Bay, Gloucester, Virginia in 1620.

The City got it's start shortly after 1607 which was the founding of Jamestown, Virginia. Peter Ransome

was responsible for transporting many people to Virginia from England. The English crown rewarded

him with thousnds of acres of land for this service. Peter and subsequently hs heirs had choice lands

for their inheritance. This wa a common thing to marry into and use the Ransome name in the naming

of their children. Peter had a son named Captain Richard Ransome that may have been responsible for

taking Richard Foster and his bride Elizabeth, his sister to England and back. glf

_I am posting this message as being of possible interest to those researching the children of William

Foster and Ann Booker. There has been some question whether Johanna Powell was the child of

William Foster or a second husband of Ann Foster's, possibly Thomas Powell. I think I can settle the

matter. It was not Ann Booker Foster who was married to Thomas Powell, but rather her daughter,

Johanna Foster. It is my belief that Johanna was, indeed, the daughter of William Forster and Ann

Booker; and that she was born in the intervening two or three years between when William made his will

and when he died, which explains why she was not mentioned in William's will. The proof of Johanna's

relationship to Thomas Powell is found in the will of Elizabeth Foster Hubbard, the wife of Benj. Hubbard,

and daughter of William Foster and Ann Booker. Elizabeth identifies Johanna Powell as her "sister and

wife of Thomas Powell". The executors are Booker Foster, Brother, and Wm. Craddock. The will is

located in Amelia County, VA will book #3:224, dated 30 November 1783. I am particularly interested in

this relationship, as I descend two ways from William Foster and Ann Booker: (1) via Johanna Foster

and Thomas Powell via their daughter Fanny Powell and her husband Phillip Adams - their daughter

was Susan Wood Adams; and (2) via their son Booker Foster who was the father of Joshua Foster. He,

Joshua, married Susan Wood Adams. I'm interested in exchanging information with anyone researching

the Adams, Foster, or Powell lines, especially the possibility of a marriage between John Adams and

_Those who trace their ancestory to Ann Booker and William Foster of mid-18th century Amelia County

VA may have wondered, as I have, who were Ann's parents. Some accounts say Edmund Booker, Sr.

was her father; other lists of his children have omitted Ann. For what it is worth, I have obtained a (typed

not original) copy of Edmund Booker's will. It identifies an Ann Booker as his daughter.__The will is

dated November 10, 1757, It was proved by oath in court held for Amelia County, Virginia, September

28, 1758. The transcribed copy I found was in the DAR library, in Arkansas Genealogical Records for

1957-58, Vol 39, Reg. No. 45929, pp 195-96, submitted by Virginia Belcher Breck, of Little Rock,

Arkansas. I will try to track down an original Amelia County will book citation.__Names included in the

will are his wife Jane (news to me), sons Edmund Booker, John Booker, Edward Booker, daughter Ann

Booker (to whom he leaves "two negroes names Dinah and Delpha with their increase"), and daughter

Rebeka Overton. Of course, it need not necessarily be our Ann Booker, mother of Booker Foster, but

the timing is about right. However, I have seen some estimated birth dates for the children of Ann

Booker and William Foster starting as early as 1750, when she was still a Booker, according to her

father's will. But, what is eight years, in the grand scheme of the mid 1700s?__Another typed will in

the same collection is the will of Frances Booker Stokes, sister of Edmund Booker, Sr. A typed notation

following the body of the will (added by Virginia Belcher Breck??) lists the wife of Edmund Booker, Sr. as

Jane Clement with a date of Oct. 7, 1745, which I take to be their wedding day.__This might mean that

she was a second wife and possibly not the mother of all his children, as at least one son, Edward, was

old enough to inherit land in 1758 -- meaning that he was born before 1738.__Another note says that "

Their mother --(the mother of Edmund Booker and his siblings) must have been a "Widow Marshall"

before she married a Booker, as Frances Stokes speaks of "Brother William Marshall". This of course

does not track with generally acceped thought that their mother was Rebecca Leake. Another marriage

perhaps? A half brother, or brother-in-law? Thoughts, anyone?

BIOGRAPHY: This information is taken from the immigrant James Richard Foster research by Dr. Billie Foster.  It is repeated here to see if any clues exist to prove the relationship for sure between these two Richards.  (James Richard Foster b. 1619 and Richard Foster b. 1723)  Later information shows that this Richard Foster's passage was paid by Bartholomew Hoskins, ancient planter, and both him and Richard migrated to Lower Norfolk County, VA where both became prominent members of the social and political society. Capt. Ed Dittmer, retired naval officer, was the first to cast doubts on Richard being the immigrant and placed James Foster of Gloucester County as the most likely immigrant. This revelation was met with little interest by most researchers since it broke the tie with English royalty. However, there were several researchers, including Miriam Wood Dye of Memphis, TN, Gerneva Foster Dennis of Abilene (now Chicago), and myself who required more than "tradition" to accept the 1635 immigrant as our immigrant. We offer the following information for your consideration:

Richard Foster of the 1635 HMS Safety was transported by Bartholomew Hoskins. We have documentation that Bartholomew married, in England, Dorcus Foster, widow with two small children. Bartholomew was called father by Richard. (March 2, 1639/40.)

Conclusion - Richard of the 1635 HMS Safety was the son of Dorcus Foster and an unknown father and the step-son of Bartholomew Hoskins. We must assume that it was this Richard Foster who migrated, with Bartholomew Hoskins, into Lower Norfolk County, VA.

We do know that Bartholomew Hoskins and Mrs. Dorcus Foster had children and one was a daughter, Dorcus, who married a Richard Foster (from Hoskins family history). However, it could not have been the 1635 Richard Foster as she was only 5-6 years old when Richard called Bartholomew father and besides Dorcus was his half-sister.

Conclusions - There were two Richard Foster's found in Lower Norfolk. The second Richard Foster could have been the Richard Foster who came to Virginia in late 1630s or early 1640s and was a lawyer.

He has been reported as Richard Worster. He was the Clerk of the Court, etc and signed his name as "ffoster" which looks like a "W." Now, both Fosters were literate as indicated by many documents.

There was at least one other Richard Foster in Lower Norfolk. He was found on Bennetts Creek on March 25, 1653/4 and signed his name with an"X", i.Ed., he could neither read nor write. So, this separates him from the above two. It could be he who married Ann Jackson and fathered a child before marriage as shown in Lower Norfolk records.

There was another Richard Foster (Deed Book B, Lower Norfolk Co., VA, p. 51) at an inquest concerning the death of Jacob Bradshaw on April 11,1647. This Richard was also illiterate and signed his name with a mark "ff." He could have been the same illiterate Richard Foster (above). However, his mark was "ff" and not "X."

Conclusion - There were three and possibly four Richard Fosters in LowerNorfolk who are potentially our immigrant: (1) Richard Foster of the Safety, step-son of Bartholomew Hoskins, (2) Richard Foster, the lawyer, (3) Richard Foster, who may have married Anne Jackson whose mark was "X" and, (4) Richard Foster, the Witness, whose mark was "ff."

Now which, if any, was our immigrant? One of these Richard Foster's married Dorcus Hoskins and received a land patent in 1651 for the transport of himself, his wife Dorcus, and daughter, Dorcus, Jr. He probably was Richard Foster, the Lawyer, as Richard, the Step-son was in England during this time (more on this later). This Richard Foster was probably the Richard Foster who was a member of the House of Burgass and was called first Lt. and then Capt. and then Major Foster and followed his father-in-law, Bartholomew Hoskins, and brother-in-law, Richard Hoskins into North Carolina. We can eliminate him as our immigrant. Richard Foster, step-son of Bartholomew, was in England from 1648 to1654. He could be our immigrant. Then there are the illiterate Richard Foster's. They are possible candidates, however, not likely as we must assume that our immigrant was literate as he came from a knighted father, Sir Robert Foster.

So, considering all of these Richards, the step-son is the most likely, "IF" our ancestor immigrant was a Richard Foster. If we assume this, then all the records in Lower Norfolk that deals with Richard Foster must concern the others. If this be so, then what was our immigrant doing from1635 to 1655?

Even the doubters disagree with, is the more likely Richard Foster, our immigrant: (1), (2), (3), or (4). I (Bill Foster) guess I am the most deviant of them all, along with Capt. Ed (I cannot speak for Miriam or Geneva), as we do not believe that a Richard Foster was our immigrant.

Our candidate is the James Foster who was living in Kingston Parish, Gloucester (now Matthews) County, VA and was a neighbor of John Garnett. The Foster's and the Garnett's were closely associated and intermarried several generations. Robert and John Foster, brothers and assumed siblings of Richard Foster, bought land in Essex County in 1692 close to a James Foster. Although circumstantial, it is compelling evidence that Robert named his first sons, Robert and James and not Richard (Richard was his fourth child, after John). We present this information to you for your consideration and to elicit your comments.

Richard Foster (1st) had Edward, John, and Richard (2nd). Richard (2nd) was the son of John, who married Abigail, daughter of the noted Ann Hutchinson of Massachussetts. John's brother Edward's daughter married two Governors of North Carolina - Sothell and Ludwell.

It has been accepted for years by most researchers that the immigrant of the Southern Fosters was a Richard Foster, son of Sir Robert Foster and Miss Isham, who sailed from London on August 10, 1635 on the ship, Safety, arriving in Virginia in the fall. That he first married an Ann and then a Sussan Garnett and became the father of two known sons, Robert and John of Gloucester and later Essex County, Virginia.

MISC_NOTES: I have researched all the birth, marriage, death, poor people, land owners, moving into and out of Whitchurch, Hampshire, England from 1600 to 1800 and find no evidence of my Richard born in 1723 of coming from this area. There was a John Foster who had 7 children all christened in the local church at Whitchurch. I no longer believe my Richard was born here. I will concentrate my efforts now in Colonial Gloucester County, Virginia. glf

MISC_NOTES: Robert L. Jackson says that the father of Richard Foster (1723) is Robert Foster(1660-1670) son of Richard Foster (1619) (the immigrant ancestor). I would like to believe this version but Robert Foster is possibly too old (53 to 63) to father Richard in 1723 and some researchers say Richard Foster was born in White Church, Hampshire, England? It is also suggested that Richard's wife, Susannah Rand was age 5 to 10 when she married and that she waited 15 more years before starting to bear children? Something is wrong with the marriage date. Also, note the difference of 6 years between 1st son Beverly Ransom Foster and next son, Peter G. Foster. Are we missing some children? glf

MISC_NOTES: Gary Foster (2001) I need to see if I can prove the possiblility that the Richard Foster, 1723 born in White Church, Hampshire, England ties into this Thomas Foster from the same place in England. As of (15 August 2005) having just viewed many microfilms at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah concerning all Foster's that could be found in WhitChurch, Hampshire, England it is my conclusion that I cannot find any proof of Foster's living in, moving out, being christened, married, died, buried or being of the poor folks. here says that due to all the times the name RANSOM is used by both of the sons--Ransom and Peter, I believe that this woman was NOT a Rand. The name RAND does not appear anywhere in the pedigree.

With Southern naming patterns using the surnames of the women--sometimes for many generations, where are the RANDs? No one has yet been able to produce a document of any sort which would connect a Susannah RAND to a Richard FOSTER. (27 Jun 2001)

DEATH: Not mentioned in Richard Foster's will, presumably Susannah was dead by the time the will was drawn up, as was the daughter (Elizabeth Foster) who bore Susannah Ransome Clark, the granddaughter mentioned in the will.

BIOGRAPHY: Robert Foster emigrated from Amelia County, Va. in 1783, and settled on the waters of

Tyger River within the present territory of Spartanburg County. His wife was Miss Sallie James. He had seven sons, viz: Thomas, Robert, William, John, James, Ransom, and Moses. Thomas and Robert were residents of Greenville County , and died in that county. William lived and died near Bethlehem church in Spartanburg County. He married Miss Exie Wingo. James married Patience Benson, daughter of Wm. Benson, whose wife was Eleanor Key. He lived near the historic Fort Prince, and he and his wife are buried near by. Mr. Benson died away from home on one of his market trips. Ransom was a soldier in the war of 1812. He married a Miss Tanner. Moses died in Spartanburg County and his family removed to Alabama. He and Ransom were twins.

BIOGRAPHY: Among the children of Thomas Foster mentioned was Jesse Foster, father of Major A. J.

and Jesse Foster. The former served as major of the Lower Battalion, 36th Regiment, S. C. M. (5),

before the war, and later, during said war, as captain of Co. B, 22nd S. C. V.

BIOGRAPHY: Among the children of William and Exie (Wingo) Foster was Colonel Robert W. Foster ,

who resided near Holly Spring, who was a man of more than ordinary intelligence and information, and

who from 1848 to '50 was a representative from Spartanburg District in the State legislature, and was also for several years colonel of the 36th Regiment, S. C. M.

BIOGRAPHY: Among the children of James Foster was Eleanor*, who married Andy Foster and

removed to Georgia, where he died in 1897; Jane, who married Zachariah Wingo and removed to

Georgia, settling on the Chattahoochee river, Forsyth County, where he died; Eliza, who married Albert

Cunningham; Abner B., who married Oney Foster, a daughter of "Mill Creek" Billy Foster; Mary, who

married Thomas A. Rogers, both lived and died in Pickens County, SC; Robert J., who married Polly A.

Bowden ; James J., who married Mary, daughter of Garland Foster, and was killed near Petersburg, March 29th, 1865; Thersa, who married George F. Steading, killed in the army; and Moses, who married Mrs. Brewton, who was Miss Sarah Alexander.

BIOGRAPHY: The last named, Captain Moses Foster, is well and popularly known to the people of Spartanburg County. He was born January, 1833 and was raised on his father's farm near Bethlehem church. He was educated in the schools of his neighborhood taught by Thomas Scruggs, Wm. Casper, Elias Stephens, Hampton Posey and others. He connected himself with Bethlehem church early in life and has been a deacon of said church since 1866; is a useful man in his church and community both by precept and example. He has very often been a delegate from his church to the associations to which it has belonged, and is an earnest advocate and contributor to all the benevolent objects which come before it.

BIOGRAPHY: Before the civil war between the states he was commissioned by the Governor of South Carolina a captain of the militia (May's old field), the company which he commanded being a part of the 36th Regiment, S. C. M. He served seven years as a commissioned officer, which, under the law, made him muster free, but at the outbreak of said war (or even a few months before) he volunteered in the Spartan Rifles under Captain Joseph Walker, which was one of the first companies to leave Spartanburg for the army. While serving in Virginia he was transferred (1862) to Co. D, Palmetto Sharpshooters, commanded by Captain A. H. Foster. In both of these companies he held the position of sergeant. He was in nearly all the battles in which his company was engaged. Was always at his post except when prevented by sickness, and was at the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse.

BIOGRAPHY: After this he returned to his farm, where he has lived for sixty years or more. He has never aspired to public office, but, by reason of his fitness for the position, was nominated and elected by the Democrats of Spartanburg County as coroner for said county, which position he held for four years.

BIOGRAPHY: By his marriage, referred to, he has three children; James Alexander, married Miss Emma, daughter of Virgil Rogers; John G. Landrum, single, and Mary Patience, single - a graduate of Limestone College.

BIOGRAPHY: Richard Foster, a first cousin of Robert Foster, emigrated from Virginia to Spartanburg District and settled in the Bethlehem neighborhood about the time that Robert came. He was married four times. Among his children were Spencer B. Foster, who was a deacon and prominent member of Bethlehem church. He was also captain of a militia company before the civil war and was for a time the captain of the old Tyger band which belonged to the 36th Regiment, S. C. M., his favorite instrument being the clarinet, which the writer, in his boyhood, delighted to hear him play. He was the father of Richard and Martin Foster; the former losing an arm at the battle of Frazier's Farm, Virginia.

William Foster, "Mill Creek Billy," first cousin to the first two, also from Amelia County, VA, lived on Fair

Forest Creek. He had nine children, viz: Moses, who married Polly Hurt; Ransom, who married a

daughter of Robert Foster in Greenville County (uncle of Captain Moses Foster); John; Jinsey, who

married Jesse Wingo, father of Wm. J. Wingo, a well known merchant who died in Spartanburg in 1895

or '96; Maiden who married Paschal Wingo, father of Rev. I. W. Wingo; Deliah, who married Burrell

Wingo, father of Robert Wingo and grandfather of Hon. John O. Wingo, Greenville County, SC, and

Stewart Wingo, Merchant at Spartanburg; Oney, who married Abner B. Foster, Annie, who married

Isham Hart; and Malinda, who married Asa Cunningham.

BIOGRAPHY: The entire families of the Foster connection in Spartanburg County have always been distinguished for their piety and high order of law abiding citizenship. No where have any people been found more patriotic, true and loyal to their county's best interest than the worthy sons which belonged to these families. No brighter example can be produced as an evidence of this fact that the case of Joseph Foster, son of Moses and Polly Hart Foster. in one of the battles in Virginia, during the civil war, he was shot through the head with a mini ball. The ball ranging below the brain entered near the eyeball and made its exit behind one ear. His recovery was one of the most remarkable occurrences in the history of surgery. From this dreadful wound he recovered in a few months and reentered the service in Virginia, and had not been there long when he was cut in two by a cannon ball in an engagement on Blackwater. He was a member of the company of Captain A. H. Foster, Palmetto Sharpshooters. James J. Foster, whose death we have already mentioned. was killed but a few days before the surrender at Appomattox. George Steading, brother-in-law of Captain Moses Foster, was killed below Richmond in front of Fort Harrison. There were several others of these families killed and considerable number wounded during the civil war. the last one that could shoulder a musket marched boldly to the front to defend his county's rights in her hour of greatest peril.

BIOGRAPHY: *This was the first lady ever baptized by Rev. John G. Landrum. At this time he was pastor of Bethlehem (Baptist) Church. On the same occasion he baptized David Bray. Sr., and Malinda Foster, who afterward became Mrs. Asa Cunningham.

It belonged to my great-aunt Myrtle Foster Reid. She gave it to my mother and my mother passed it along to me. It was really this Bible that first got me interested in Genealogy. The Bible lists family records for William "Mill Creek Billy" Foster and his wife and children. It also lists records for Joseph Barnett, his wife, Lucy Wade and their children. There are also records for Micajah Barnett, son of Joseph and Lucy, his wife and their children.

No one in my family knew who the Barnetts were. We had no knowledge of any connection with the Barnett family. So, I began a mission to find out who they were and why their records were in my Foster Family Bible. __It wasn’t very difficult to find Barnett ancestors of Joseph Barnett. However, the mystery wasn’t solved, as they had no information linking our two families. The information about the Barnetts that is contained in the Bible was very exciting to the Barnett researchers, since this was the first source they had found for actual birth dates of some of the earlier Barnetts. Of course, they were also anxious to figure out why records for the two families are contained within the same Bible. As of yet, we haven’t been able to do this. We really want to how these families intertwine. __A little about the Bible: The bible is in very poor condition. It is actually falling apart and is coming unbound. Many of the pages are crumbling. __The bible appears to me to have been rebound at some point in time. This rebinding appears to have been a "homemade" job. The pieces of cardboard that form the front and back covers have scribbling on them and are covered with thin pieces of leather sewn into place with heavy thread. The old and new testaments appear to have come from two different bibles. As indicated from the copies of the old and new testament fly leaf pages, these two bibles have different publishers and different publication dates. Since the flyleaf page for the new testament is loose, it is possible that the page is from an entirely different bible. However, the styles of print and language used in the old and in the new testaments are completely different. This would indicate that two separate bibles were bound together. __Most of the Foster pages have come loose, but at least one is still attached to the Bible. Both of the Barnett pages are still attached. The only writing in the bible other than the family records recorded on the blank pages is the name "Malinda Foster" written on the top of one of the Genesis pages.
