BIOGRAPHY: "William Randolph of "Turkey Island," Henrico, was a son of Col. William Randolph of the same place, and was born in Nov., 1681. His first public office seems to have been assistant to his father as clerk of the house of burgesses, a position to which he finally succeeded, holding it until 1712. In 1720, and probably other years, he was a member of the house of burgesses for Henrico county, and in 1727, he was appointed to the council. In 1737, he made a voyage to England for his health, but returned the following year from which time he was a constant attendant at the sessions of the council until his death which occurred Oct. 19, 1742. He married Elizabeth Beverley, daughter of Hon. Peter Beverley, of Gloucester county, Virginia, and had issue."

He was a member of the House of Burgesses 1718 and 1720-1726 at Virginia. He was a member of Council between 1728 and 1742 at Virginia. He was Treasurer of the Colony in 1738 in Virginia. He was Royal Councillor of Statein 1737 in Virginia. He died at age 60, and was buried at "Turkey Island", Henrico Co., VA.

Elizabeth BEVERLEY, daughter of Col. Peter BEVERLEY and Elizabeth PEYTON, was buried on Turkey Island, and her gravestone inscription contains some useful family information. It states that she was born 1 January 1691, "the second daughter of Peter BEVERLEY of the county of Gloucester, Esq., by Elizabeth his wife, who was daughter of Robert PEYTON of an ancient family in Norfolk, Gent." --i.e. Norfolk, England. This gravestone also states that Elizabeth was married to William RANDOLPH on 22 June 1709 and died 26 December 1723.

BIOGRAPHY:  Col. Thomas and Judith (Fleming) Randolph lived at "Tuckahoe" in what is now Goochland County. The plantation has survived and is one of the finest existing early eighteenth-century plantations in America. It stands in its virtually undisturbed setting on a bluff overlooking the James River valley. It is located on River Road seven miles west of Richmond and is open to the public by appointment.

MISC_NOTES: There is a very big error in the Ancestral file because William Randolph, who was an uncle of President Thomas Jefferson, is listed as having two sets of parents. This causes one set of his parents to be listed as having 20 children. All of these family records, both of parents and of children, are likely to be wrong. The correct parents are Col. Isham Randolph and Jane Rogers, and not Henry Randolph IV and Tabitha Poythress. I say this because Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to his uncle William Randolph saying in effect, "by the way, your sister died last year". This is the only time that Thomas Jefferson ever mentioned his mother, Jane Randolph, in any of his thousands of letters which he wrote. His uncle, William Randolph, born in Virginia, had moved to England, a reverse immigration. BIOGRAPHY: "John Stith, son of Major John Stith (q. v.), had in 1692 a patent for land on the south side of Chickahominy river, in James City county. He was captain of the militia in 1692, sheriff in 1691, and burgess for Charles City county in 1692-93. He married Mary Randolph, daughter of William Randolph, of Turkey Island, and Mary Isham, his wife. He died before 1724, leaving issue:

HISTORY: Sir John Randolph

(Born 1693, died 1737)

It was written of Sir John Randolph that "his Parts were bright and strong; his Learning extensive and useful." He was, it was said, "An Assertor of the just Rights and natural Liberties of Mankind; an Enemy of Oppression; a Support to the Distressed." He had, in short, "the Air of a man of quality." The phrases are lifted from Randolph's obituary in the March 11, 1737, edition of Williamsburg's Virginia Gazette. Had they been written about another man, they might be discounted as the sort of overgenerous flattery that characterized the death notices of prominent men. But such things were said of Sir John Randolph while he lived, and modern biographers fill their columns with his praise.

According to these reports, Sir John was modest and sincere, a man of integrity and patience who had great concern for impartiality and the rule of law. He was tactful, warm, and good-humored. He was the only colonial-born Virginian to be distinguished with knighthood and the best-regarded lawyer in the colony. A legal scholar, he had an interest in literature and history and a remarkable library.

Born in 1693 to William and Mary Isham Randolph of Turkey Island in Charles City County, Sir John was the youngest of six brothers who, with their two sisters, led Virginia's most powerful family into the 18th century.

An early student of the College of William and Mary, Randolph finished his studies in the fall of 1711 as "first scholar" and took up the study of the law. Governor Alexander Spotswood made him a deputy attorney general of Charles City, Prince George, and Henrico Counties the following year.

Randolph prosecuted cases for the Crown until he followed his legal studies to London to be admitted to Grays Inn at the Inns of Court on May 17, 1715. He made short work of his courses, being called to the bar November 25, 1717, and leaving for Virginia the following spring. Spotswood appointed him clerk of the House of Burgesses as soon as he returned.

That appears to be the year Randolph married Susannah Beverley, whose elder sister had married his eldest brother. Their first child, a boy named Beverley, was born about 1720, and their second, Peyton, in 1721.

Randolph took leave of his young family in 1722 to act as secretary to the Virginia delegation that traveled to Albany, New York, for a meeting of Iroquois chiefs organized by Governor William Burnet of that state.

Williamsburg was incorporated that year, and Randolph was among the original aldermen. Although we do not know where the family first lived in Williamsburg, Randolph acquired two wooden houses thirty-six feet apart on Market Square in 1724. Joining them with a center section, he fashioned what today is called the Peyton Randolph House.

His most valuable property was a plantation across the York River in Gloucester County, and at the end of his life he also owned other lots in Williamsburg, lots with a tobacco warehouse at College Creek, a 100-acre plantation at Archer's Hope Creek, lands in Martin's Hundred near Carter's Grove, and lands on the Chickahominy River.

In April 1726 the governor appointed Randolph the colony's acting attorney general and acting clerk of its Council. Perhaps the year after, Susannah gave birth to their son John. The date of birth of their only daughter, Mary, is unknown.

Apart from his official duties, Randolph had a valuable private law practice. He represented prominent men, but accepted the cases of the less fortunate for "Fees he constantly remitted, when he thought the Paiment of them would be grievous to themselves or Families."

In 1728 he took the House of Burgesses for a client. The house sent Randolph to London as its special agent to secure repeal of a law that prohibited the export of tobacco leaf that had been removed from the stalk. The stems added to the bulk of shipments, and thus to the number of hogsheads the Crown might tax, but impaired the quality of the product and cheapened market prices.

In addition, Randolph represented the College of William and Mary in the transfer of its property from its trustees to its president and faculty. His service was memorialized in an illuminated and handsomely penned parchment.

Randolph returned to Virginia to report success in both endeavors and was dispatched again to England in 1732 to try to persuade Parliament to adopt an excise on tobacco imported to England. The intent was to improve the economics of the trade, but in this he failed, despite enlisting the help of the prime minister, Sir Robert Walpole.

In any case, Randolph distinguished himself by his industry and skill and, perhaps because of them, was knighted. The date and the circumstances of the honor are not known, but he was listed on the rolls of the Imperial Society of the Knights Bachelor by September 1732.

Before returning to Virginia in the summer of 1733, Randolph asked the bishop of London and the archbishop of Canterbury for advice on books for the library of the Brafferton, the Indian school at the College of William and Mary, and he attempted to secure a long-promised donation of volumes.

On August 22, 1734, Sir John Randolph resigned the clerkship of the House of Burgesses. The next day, the college administration elected him its burgess, and on Saturday the burgesses elected him Speaker of the House. In September he became a justice of Gloucester County, and in October he became treasurer of the colony. When Norfolk was incorporated in 1736, it made Randolph its recorder. Although the work of the office would be performed by a deputy, the city marked his swearing in with an elaborate celebration.

Despite the accumulation of wealth, honors, and offices--perhaps because of it--Randolph did not escape criticism or controversy. Spotswood, now a private citizen embittered by political battles of the past, attacked Randolph in the public prints, describing him as "a fawning creature . . . whose Pride and Spell has made him turn against his Benefactor, who first promoted him in the World." Randolph answered the assault in the Virginia Gazette with an angry rejoinder.

He preferred simplicity in religion, which offended the dogmatism of the established clergy. In some quarters he was regarded as a deist, a heretic, and a schismatic. These charges he answered in his will, writing a long profession of Christian faith based on the unembellished precepts of the Bible.

He also recorded in his will that he had earned his estate honestly, "tho' by a profession much exposed to temptations of deceit and extortion."Randolph died on March 7, 1737, and "was (according to his own Directions) carried from his House to the Place of Interment, by Six honest, industrious, poor-House-keepers of Bruton Parish" who divided £20 for their services. The place of interment was the chapel of the Wren Building at the College of William and Mary.

Fire gutted the Wren in 1859 and the burial vaults were disturbed. A physician who examined the contents of Sir John Randolph's tomb discovered the bones of two men. The identity of the second is a mystery.

History: Lady Susannah Beverley Randolph

(Born ca. 1692, died after 1754)

In almost two centuries of colonial Virginia history, there was only one woman who had a certifiable claim to the title of Lady--Susannah Beverley Randolph.

Courtesy, of course, bestowed the honor of "lady" on every woman of "the better sort," and certainly most of "the middling class." But she was the wife of Sir John Randolph, the only Virginian knighted from the day Roanoke Island was settled in 1585 until independence was declared in 1776.

To be a Randolph was to be a member of the most powerful clan in 18th-century Virginia. Sir John was the most accomplished lawyer in the colony, and a public servant of the first rank. But Susannah Beverley brought to her marriage a connection to a family nearly as distinguished. Her kinsmen had been high government officials and prominent planters. One had written a history of the colony in 1705 that was still in print 242 years later.

Susannah Beverley Randolph was born about 1692 and became a wife about 1718--there are no records of the exact dates. If truly 26 at the time of her marriage, she was rather mature for a colonial bride, but certainly not alone in taking her vows at that age. Her eldest sister was the wife of her husband's eldest brother, which may suggest how they met. Whatever the uncertainties, there is no doubt that Sir John found her to be an excellent mate, or that she reared children of unusual ability.

It appears--again the records are silent--that she bore her first child, a son named Beverley, about 1720. Peyton, named for his maternal grandmother's family, was born in 1721. John, known to historians as "The Tory," but sincerely respected by his contemporaries, was born in 1727 or 1728. Her only daughter, Mary, followed, but the year of her birth is uncertain.

Apart from her children, Susannah Randolph had charge of a domestic establishment that was among Williamsburg's largest and best. Moreover, there were three plantations, at least one of which had houses of some sort that may have required her management. Her husband's position required frequent and fine entertaining of clients and associates, an activity that also required her attention.

Sir John's obituary in the Virginia Gazette stated: "As he received a noble Income, for Services in his Profession and Emploiments, so he, in some Measure, made a Return, by a most generous, open and elegant Table . . . . But the Plenty, Conduct, and Hospitality, which appeared there, reflect an equal Praise on himself and his Lady."

Widowed in 1737, she was entrusted with a share in the supervision of her husband's estate for the benefit of their children and for herself. When Sir John penned the portion of his will specifying his bequests, he began with "my dear and most beloved wife who for her faithfulness affection and prudence deserves to be remembered in the first place." She was given the use of his property in Williamsburg for her life, after which it became Peyton Randolph's.

In the care of the estate, she had the assistance of her two brothers-in-law, but she seems to have been quite capable of acting for herself. In 1740, after the family's tobacco inspection and warehousing facilities on nearby College Creek expanded, she petitioned the General Assembly for an increase in the rents. Her petition was granted.

She still moved in Williamsburg's social circle and remained the object of the considerate attention of the friends she and her husband had shared. Among them was William Byrd II, who was a member of the colony's Council and General Court, the scion of another first family, and the master of Westover plantation on the James River.

Byrd and his wife were old and particular friends, and his diaries record visits to the Widow Randolph many evenings when business carried him to the city. Sometimes she sent a carriage to meet him at the ferry. They played cards, drank tea, or merely visited. In the words of a Colonial Williamsburg historian,

Byrd had "special ties of affectionate concern for her welfare, and pleasure in her company."

By 1751, and perhaps earlier, Susannah had the company of son Peyton and his wife as well. In 1745, when he was entitled to his share in the income of his father's estate, he married Betty Harrison. Peyton may have lived with his mother all along, but by 1751 the house was referred to as if it were already his, suggesting that he was in residence and in charge.

The records of Bruton Parish Church show that Susannah Randolph had two slaves baptized in 1754. It is her last appearance in the historical record. Neither the date of her death nor the place of her burial is known.

Beverly son of Robert Beverley, the historian, was born about 1698, lived at "Blandfield," Essex county,

which he built and which still remains in the possession of the family (in 1977). He was clerk of Essex

county from 1716 to 1745, Burgess for Orange county 1734-1740 and for Essex 1742-1747 and 1748-

1749. With Sir John Randolph, Richard Randolph and John Robinson, he obtained on Sept. 6, 1636, a

grant of 118,490 acres called "Beverley Manor," in Augusta county, though he had the chief interest. He

married Elizabeth Bland, (born May 29, 1706) daughter of Richard Bland of "Jordan's" Prince George

county, and died on or before 1766.

1749. He was a member of Council between 1752 and 1755 in Virginia. He left a will on 3 Dec 1755;

proved 3 May 1756. He heired large properties, including land in Essex County. His largest estate was "

Beverley Manor" a tract of 118,490 acres in Augusta County. He built "Blandfield" in Essex Co., where

he lived and died. This magnificent Colonial Georgian brick mansion with its dependencies is on an

estate of about 5,000 acres and remains in the Beverley family where today (article references May

1977) live Mr. and Mrs. Bradshaw Beverley and his mother, Mrs. William Beverley. (Later, was sold for

taxes.)

BIOGRAPHY: John Stith, son of John Stith and Mary Randolph, had large tracts of land in Charles City

and Prince George counties. He was burgess for Charles City county, 1718, 1723, 1726, and in May,

1737, took the oath as lieutenant-colonel of the militia. He married Elizabeth Anderson, a daughter of

Rev. Charles Anderson, of Westover, and died about 1758.

Thomas was probably born in York Co., VA. He patented 320 acres between Piney Mountain and

Brown's Cove, Hanover Co., where he was living in 1743 in Fredericksburg Parish and as late as 28 Apr

1761. He was a planter. He removed before Oct 10, 1773 to Albemarle Co. where he died.

Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume II, I--Fathers of the Revolution: "Thomas Jefferson son of

Peter Jefferson and Jane Randolph, daughter of Isham Randolph, of "Dungeness," Goochland county,

Virginia, was born at "Shadwell," Albemarle county, April 2, 1743. Though his father died when he was

fourteen years old, he was thoroughly trained by private tutors. and spent two years (1760-1762) at

William and Mary College. He then studied law for five years under Chancellor Wythe, in Williamsburg,

and was admitted to the bar when twenty-four years old. In 1769 he was elected to the house of

burgesses from Albemarle, and became at once one of the group of new men who took the lead in

public affairs. In 1773 he assisted in establishing committees of correspondence between the colonies,

the first step towards Union. In 1774 he drafted instructions for the Virginia delegates to the first

Congress, assuming the extreme ground taken by Bland in 1766, and summing up, with trenchant pen,

that easily gave him the first place among American writers, the rights and wrongs of the continent. This

magnificent paper contained every idea in the Declaration of Independence except the explicit statement

of separation. It was published in pamphlet form under the title of "a Summary View of the Rights of

British America."

Political events absorbed his attention, and he relinquished his law practice, which was very extensive.

He was a member of the Virginia convention of March, 1775, and when Patrick Henry made his motion

to organize the militia, Jefferson argued "closely, profoundly, and warmly on the same side." In the

house of burgesses, June, 1775, he prepared a masterly reply to Lord North's "Conciliatory Proposition,"

and soon after, in the second Congress, to which he was elected June 20, 1775, on the retirement of

Peyton Randolph, he prepared a similar paper as the answer of that body. He attended the third

Congress, which met in Philadelphia. September 25, 1775, but left before it adjourned, and did not again

present himself till May 13, 1776. Then, as chairman of a committee, he drafted the Declaration of

Independence, which has immortalized him. On September 2, 1776. he resigned from Congress and

returned home, but Congress, unwilling to dispense with his services, associated him with Dr. Franklin

and Silas Deane to negotiate treaties of alliance and commerce with France. This appointment he

declined on account of his wife's declining health, and in October he took his seat in the house of

delegates of Virginia, and applied himself to reforming the Virginia code. The great series of bills which

he prepared, and which in great part were adopted, concerning the descent of lands, religion, education

and slavery, constitutes a great monument to his ability and patriotism. In January, 1779, he succeeded

Patrick Henry as governor, and was reelected in 1780. Among his important measures in this office were

the removal of the capital to Richmond, his maintaining Virginia's quota in Washington's army in the

North, and his supplying General Greene's army in the South with provisions and munitions of war.

Jefferson narrowly escaped capture when Cornwallis' troops were so near Charlottesville that the

legislature had to adjourn to Staunton. He declined to apply for a third election to the governorship in

1781, and employed his leisure in writing his "Notes on Virginia," a work still regarded most highly.

Congress appointed him one of the commissioners to treat for peace, but he declined because of the

illness of his wife, who died September 6, 1782. Later he accepted the office of peace commissioner,

but peace was restored before he could sail for Europe. In 1783 he was elected to Congress, which sat

at Annapolis, May 7, 1784. In this body his most prominent work was the ordinance for the government

of the northwest territory. Congress again elected him minister, in conjunction with Mr. Adams and

Benjamin Franklin, to negotiate treaties of commerce with foreign nations. He sailed from Boston, July 5,

1784, and reached Paris, August 6. On the resignation of Dr. Franklin he was appointed minister

plenipotentiary to France. His three years there resulted in his arrangement of a satisfactory consular

system between France and the United States. He meantime traveled extensively in Europe, and

became intimate with many famous scientists, and his "Notes on Virginia," appearing in a French

translation, won for him great admiration. In November, 1789, he returned home on a six months leave

of absence, and found awaiting him his appointment as secretary of state by President Washington,

which he accepted. During his five years service in this office, he distinguished himsell by many

important public reports, but the differences with Hamilton, secretary of the treasury, grew so acute that

Jefferson resigned, January 1, 1794, Washington vainly endeavoring to retain him. In September, 1794,

Washington urged him strongly to resume the state secretaryship, but he positively declined, declaring

with emphasis that nothing could induce him to again engage in the public service. However, in 1796, he

was the presidential candidate of the Democratic-Republican party, and his vote being next largest to

Adams, under the constitution he became vice-president. This office imposed but light duties, and he

gave much of his time to study and research, and prepared his famous "Manual of Parliamentary

Practice," which has been the principal guide in Congress to the present day. In 1800 he again became

the candidate of his party for the presidency, but though his vote in the electoral college was greater

than his Federalist competitor, an equal vote was given to Aaron Burr, whom the Republicans intended

to be vice-president, and the election under the constitution, as it then stood, came to the house of

representatives. Here after a long continued attempt of the Federalists to reverse the decision of the

people and to place Burr in the presidency, Jefferson was finally declared president. In this high office

he held to the simplest forms of conduct, abolishing weekly levees, elaborate precedence, rules, etc. A

signal innovation consisted in his communicating his messages in writing instead of delivering them in

person as Washington and Adams had done. This continued to be the rule for all his successors till

present conditions having removed the old objections, President Wilson revived the obsolete practice of

John Adams. His most notable achievement as president was the purchase of the vast Louisiana

territory, which was practically his own unaided work. Second only in importance to this was his success

in keeping the country from becoming involved in the European wars. Re-elected in 1804, he retired

after the close of his second term to his home, "Monticello," near Charlottesville, Virginia. The work of

his latter days was the University of Virginia, which he projected and lived long enough to see in perfect

working order. He superintended every detail, laid down the plans for all the severely classical buildings,

procured the funds for their erection, and mapped out the collegiate curricula. At his beautiful mansion, "

Monticello," he entertained the most distinguished men of his day, and there, after his death, his

daughter, Mrs. Randolph, passed the remainder of her life in ease and comfort, with the aid of $10,000

gratuity from the states of Virginia and South Carolina, granted as a tribute to the memory of her

illustrious father. His affairs had become badly involved, and he had been obliged to sell to Congress his

valuable library for about one-fourth of its cost. He died July 4, 1826, and was buried at "Monticello,"

where his grave was marked with a stone bearing the following inscription written by himself: "Here was

buried Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, of the Statute of Virginia for

Religious Freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia." This was afterwards replaced with a

massive pillar erected by the government of the United States, and bearing the same inscription. From

the day of his death to the present time, no other public man has been so often quoted. In originality of

mind, versatility of talent, general sweep of intellect, universality of knowledge, power over men, and

conception of the rights of mankind, he stood easily head and shoulders above all his great

contemporaries.

BIOGRAPHY: Thomas Jefferson

In the thick of party conflict in 1800, Thomas Jefferson wrote in a private letter, "I have sworn upon the

altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man."

This powerful advocate of liberty was born in 1743 in Albermarle County, Virginia, inheriting from his

father, a planter and surveyor, some 5,000 acres of land, and from his mother, a Randolph, high social

standing. He studied at the College of William and Mary, then read law. In 1772 he married Martha

Wayles Skelton, a widow, and took her to live in his partly constructed mountaintop home, Monticello.

Freckled and sandy-haired, rather tall and awkward, Jefferson was eloquent as a correspondent, but he

was no public speaker. In the Virginia House of Burgesses and the Continental Congress, he

contributed his pen rather than his voice to the patriot cause. As the "silent member" of the Congress,

Jefferson, at 33, drafted the Declaration of Independence. In years following he labored to make its

words a reality in Virginia. Most notably, he wrote a bill establishing religious freedom, enacted in 1786.

Jefferson succeeded Benjamin Franklin as minister to France in 1785. His sympathy for the French

Revolution led him into conflict with Alexander Hamilton when Jefferson was Secretary of State in

President Washington's Cabinet. He resigned in 1793.

Sharp political conflict developed, and two separate parties, the Federalists and the Democratic-

Republicans, began to form. Jefferson gradually assumed leadership of the Republicans, who

sympathized with the revolutionary cause in France. Attacking Federalist policies, he opposed a strong

centralized Government and championed the rights of states.

As a reluctant candidate for President in 1796, Jefferson came within three votes of election. Through a

flaw in the Constitution, he became Vice President, although an opponent of President Adams. In 1800

the defect caused a more serious problem. Republican electors, attempting to name both a President

and a Vice President from their own party, cast a tie vote between Jefferson and Aaron Burr. The House

of Representatives settled the tie. Hamilton, disliking both Jefferson and Burr, nevertheless urged

Jefferson's election.

When Jefferson assumed the Presidency, the crisis in France had passed. He slashed Army and Navy

expenditures, cut the budget, eliminated the tax on whiskey so unpopular in the West, yet reduced the

national debt by a third. He also sent a naval squadron to fight the Barbary pirates, who were harassing

American commerce in the Mediterranean. Further, although the Constitution made no provision for the

acquisition of new land, Jefferson suppressed his qualms over constitutionality when he had the

opportunity to acquire the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon in 1803.

During Jefferson's second term, he was increasingly preoccupied with keeping the Nation from

involvement in the Napoleonic wars, though both England and France interfered with the neutral rights

of American merchantmen. Jefferson's attempted solution, an embargo upon American shipping, worked

badly and was unpopular.

Jefferson retired to Monticello to ponder such projects as his grand designs for the University of Virginia.

A French nobleman observed that he had placed his house and his mind "on an elevated situation, from

which he might contemplate the universe."

He died on July 4, 1826.

Martha Wayles and Thomas Jefferson were married in 1772. Martha's father, John Wayles died the

next year. Martha and Thomas inherited from John Wayles a portion of slaves which included Sally's

family.

A dowry of 200 pounds was paid to John Bolling for his marriage to Mary "Polly" Jefferson. The six foot,

large John Bolling was not particularily interested in the local girls until he met and married Mary. John,

while living at "Fairfield", was at one time the Sheriff of Goochland County, Virginia and also served in

the House of Burgesses from that county. He later moved over to Chesterfield County, Virginia.

Mary "Polly" probably attended the one room school house for a time, with her famous brother, Thomas

Jefferson, located at "Tuckahoe" (an H shaped home still standing on River Road west of Richmond and

open to tourists).

One of the early controversies in the life of Thomas Jefferson concerned his relationaship with Elizabeth

Walker, his neighbor's wife. When Gen. John Walker went off on a military campaign, he asked Thomas

Jefferson to take care of his wife, which Jefferson did. When Walker returned in 1768, he discovered

that his wife had been sleeping with Thomas Jefferson. According to Jefferson Historian Fawn Brodie,

John Walker challenged Jefferson to a duel, but Jefferson declined. Later, Walker tried to make amends

with Jefferson but Jefferson refused to come see him.

There is no record of any marriage between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings. However, the way

the software I use works is that if a man and a woman have a child together, then they were married.

I have selected the date of 6 April 1789 for the "marriage", because there is evidence that this is the

date that Sally and Tommy became sweethearts.

Thomas Jefferson's account book shows that on April 6, 1789 he spent 96 francs on "clothes for Sally".

Then, on April 16, 1789, he spent 72 francs on more clothes for Sally. Then, on April 26, 1789 he spent

23 francs on "making clothes for servants". Finally, on May 25, 1789, he "paid making clothes for Sally

25 francs."

This is the only time before or after that the records of Thomas Jefferson show him buying anything at all

for Sally or for any of his other slaves.

Thus, it appears more than likely that it was in April, 1789 that he started having relations with her. Also,

the entire volume of his letters is missing for the year 1789. It appears likely that the letters for that year

were destroyed because they contained references to the relationship between Thomas Jefferson and

Sally Hemings.

Although Maria Cosway was an accomplished artist, she is now remembered primarily because of the

question: "Did she, or did she not, sleep with Thomas Jefferson?"

From reading the torrid love letters she exchanged with Thomas Jefferson, one can say that it is beyond

reasonable doubt that she did sleep with Thomas Jefferson. However, he dumped her after he got

involved with Sally Hemings.

Her husband was an artist of great renown. However, he was also a notorious homosexual. This led

Maria Cosway to seek out numerous lovers in her lifetime. Thomas Jefferson was one of her early lovers.

An excellent article in the August 1971 issue of American Heritage magazine entitled "Thomas Jefferson

and Maria Cosway" provides ample evidence that their relationship in 1786 was sexual.

Maria (Hadfield) Cosway was born in Florence, Italy in 1759. Maria's parents owned three inns in

Florence that were very popular with the English who would be visitors taking the Grand Tour. Maria's

brother George Hadfield was a famous architect who is best known for designing the Arlington House in

Virginia.

BIOGRAPHY: Later information shows that this Richard Foster's passage was paid by Bartholomew

Hoskins, ancient planter, and both him and Richard migrated to Lower Norfolk County, VA where both

became prominent members of the social and political society.

Capt. Ed Dittmer, retired naval officer, was the first to cast doubts on Richard being the immigrant and

placed James Foster of Gloucester County as the most likely immigrant. This revelation was met with

little interest by most researchers since it broke the tie with English royalty. However, there were

several researchers, including Miriam Wood Dye of Memphis, TN, Gerneva Foster Dennis of Abilene

(now Chicago), and myself who required more than "tradition" to accept the 1635 immigrant as our

immigrant. We offer the following information for your consideration:

Richard Foster of the 1635 HMS Safety was transported by Bartholomew Hoskins. We have

documentation that Bartholomew married, in England, Dorcus Foster, widow with two small children.

Bartholomew was called father by Richard. (March 2, 1639/40.)

Conclusion - Richard of the 1635 HMS Safety was the son of Dorcus Foster and an unknown father and

the step-son of Bartholomew Hoskins. We must assume that it was this Richard Foster who migrated,

with Bartholomew Hoskins, into Lower Norfolk County, VA.

We do know that Bartholomew Hoskins and Mrs. Dorcus Foster had children and one was a daughter,

Dorcus, who married a Richard Foster (from Hoskins family history). However, it could not have been

the 1635 Richard Foster as she was only 5-6 years old when Richard called Bartholomew father and

besides Dorcus was his half-sister.

Conclusions - There were two Richard Foster's found in Lower Norfolk. The second Richard Foster

could have been the Richard Foster who came to Virginia in late 1630s or early 1640s and was a lawyer.

He has been reported as Richard Worster. He was the Clerk of the Court, etc and signed his name as "

ffoster" which looks like a "W." Now, both Fosters were literate as indicated by many documents.

There was at least one other Richard Foster in Lower Norfolk. He was found on Bennetts Creek on

March 25, 1653/4 and signed his name with an"X", i.Ed., he could neither read nor write. So, this

separates him from the above two. It could be he who married Ann Jackson and fathered a child before

marriage as shown in Lower Norfolk records.

There was another Richard Foster (Deed Book B, Lower Norfolk Co., VA, p. 51) at an inquest

concerning the death of Jacob Bradshaw on April 11,1647. This Richard was also illiterate and signed

his name with a mark "ff." He could have been the same illiterate Richard Foster (above). However, his

mark was "ff" and not "X."

Conclusion - There were three and possibly four Richard Fosters in LowerNorfolk who are potentially our

immigrant: (1) Richard Foster of the Safety, step-son of Bartholomew Hoskins, (2) Richard Foster, the

lawyer, (3) Richard Foster, who may have married Anne Jackson whose mark was "X" and, (4) Richard

Foster, the Witness, whose mark was "ff."

Now which, if any, was our immigrant? One of these Richard Foster's married Dorcus Hoskins and

received a land patent in 1651 for the transport of himself, his wife Dorcus, and daughter, Dorcus, Jr. He

probably was Richard Foster, the Lawyer, as Richard, the Step-son was in England during this time

(more on this later). This Richard Foster was probably the Richard Foster who was a member of the

House of Burgass and was called first Lt. and then Capt. and then Major Foster and followed his father-in

-law, Bartholomew Hoskins, and brother-in-law, Richard Hoskins into North Carolina. We can eliminate

him as our immigrant. Richard Foster, step-son of Bartholomew, was in England from 1648 to1654. He

could be our immigrant. Then there are the illiterate Richard Foster's. They are possible candidates,

however, not likely as we must assume that our immigrant was literate as he came from a knighted

father, Sir Robert Foster.

There was a Richard Foster who received 200 acres of land in Mackjack Bay (later called Gloucester

County, VA). This land joined Col. George Ludlow, who was in the records of Jamestown and Lower

Norfolk Counties. Now, Richard Foster, step-son of Bartholomew Hoskins was in England until 1654

and the land was patented on April 1, 1655. Could this have been the Richard Foster who patented that

land? Could this have been Richard Foster who married Susan Garnett and became our immigrant

ancestor. We have no proof or even an indication that it is so - the land or the marriage.

So, considering all of these Richards, the step-son is the most likely, "IF" our ancestor immigrant was a

Richard Foster. If we assume this, then all the records in Lower Norfolk that deals with Richard Foster

must concern the others. If this be so, then what was our immigrant doing from1635 to 1655?

Even the doubters disagree with, is the more likely Richard Foster, our immigrant: (1), (2), (3), or (4). I

(Bill Foster) guess I am the most deviant of them all, along with Capt. Ed (I cannot speak for Miriam or

Geneva), as we do not believe that a Richard Foster was our immigrant.

Our candidate is the James Foster who was living in Kingston Parish,Gloucester (now Matthews)

County, VA and was a neighbor of John Garnett. The Foster's and the Garnett's were closely

associated and intermarried several generations. Robert and John Foster, brothers and assumed

siblings of Richard Foster, bought land in Essex County in 1692 close to a James Foster. Although

circumstantial, it is compelling evidence that Robert named his first sons, Robert and James and not

Richard (Richard was his fourth child, after John). We present this information to you for your

consideration and to elicit your comments.

It has been accepted for years by most researchers that the immigrant of the Southern Fosters was a

Richard Foster, son of Sir Robert Foster and Miss Isham, who sailed from London on August 10, 1635

on the ship, Safety, arriving in Virginia in the fall. That he first married an Ann and then a Sussan

Garnett and became the father of two known sons, Robert and John of Gloucester and later Essex

County, Virginia.

Nancy Randolph became famous for giving birth to an illegitimate black child who became known as "

was born in Chesterfield county, Virginia, and attained prominence in his profession in Richmond,

May 24, 1813, to March 2, 1815. He was an able supporter of the administration of James Madison. Two

years later he became a member of the United States senate, but resigned in 1819 on account of ill

health. He retired to his estate in Buckingham county, where the remaining years of his life were spent.

He married (first) Maria, daughter of President Thomas Jefferson, and (second) Martha, daughter of

Willie Jones, member of Congress from North Carolina. His death occurred September 20, 1823.

MISC_NOTES: Notes of Gary Foster - Beverly Ransome may have been named for his lineage. His

given name of Beverly for his mother's mother Elizabeth Beverly. His middle name of Ransome for his

father's mother (Elizabeth Ransome). Or his mother simply named her children after some of the most

prominent families in Virginia. glf

MISC_NOTES: Some researchers list Beverly Ranson Foster as Ranson and some as Ransome. Very

few use his first name as Beverly. glf

DEATH: I have found no record of a will. The last official record of her is in Brunswick C ounty, VA,

Court Order Book 26, page 45, as executrix of Ransom's will. According to Barbara Longwell, in the

Brunswick County Fiduciary Accounts, vol 8, page 107, March 12, 1814: "Estate of Elizabeth Foster

deceased is in account current with Samuel Foster adm."

This is her grandfather's will (Richard Foster). Her daughter, Susanna R. Clark, is named here but Miss

Foster's given name is not. Miss Foster's mother Susannah's name was not mentioned in the will so we

that Peter's middle initial of "G" is really Garnett? That would be his grandfather Richard 's mother's

WILL: Peter is the administrator for William Foster, dec'd, in Brunswick County, VA, Court Order Book

26, page 284, dated 23 May 1815. William was a son of Ransom and nephew to Peter. John H Foster

was also mentioned in the same record and was also one of Ransom's son's. Peter G. and Beverly

Ransom were brothers, sons of Richard & Susannah Foster of Gloucester, Virginia.

Simply lists a Peter Foster living here at the time. Our Peter Garnett Foster was born 22 Mar 1757 and

died 31 Dec 1819 and lived in Ware Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia. He and his wife Ann Hall gave

birth to 3 sons and 5 daughters. The first three children were born in Gloucester County, Richard was

born in Matthews County and the last 4 children were born in Franklin, North Carolina.

and settled: Joel Foster who settled on the North River in Matthews County, VA, Harold Foster who

settled in Brunswick County,VA, and Richard Foster (grandfather of Sussanah Ransome Foster) b: abt

1703, married Sussanah Rand and settled on the North River in Matthews County, VA.

Note: if the above is true then the Foster Family connection to Richard Forster / Foster b. 1619

(immigrant ancestor) is in question. glf

Sussanah and Richard Foster had two sons: Peter (m. Ann Hall) and Richard (m. Elizabeth Jordan Hall).

The women were sisters and daughters of Robert Hall and Nancy Johnston who had eloped from

England and settled in VA.
