Definition:
When you export information from most genealogy software programs to a data file, you create a GEDCOM file.  GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunications.  You may want to check to see if there are facilities where you can create GEDCOM files - such as a friend, local library, genealogical society, or school.

GEDCOM is a computer format that permits one type of software program to read genealogical records created in another program. GEDCOM was created by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to make it possible for individuals with different brands of software and computers to share their information. You can recognize a GEDCOM file on your computer because its file name ends with ".ged."

You use a GEDCOM data file when you want to share information with someone easily without retyping.
